Dave Balne – SBX Team Head Coach

Level IV Coach (In Progress); CSCP Learning Facilitator; CASI Level IV Evaluator; CSCF II, HBOR, BSc

The ultimate legacy that I would like to leave as a coach is not just a list of successful athletes, but rather a group of people who are the products of being successful athletes:  active members of society and positive role models for future generations.  I strongly believe that serious participation in sport teaches young adults the self confidence, self reliance, and motivation to accomplish more then they could have imagined.  Snowboarding is a great metaphor for life, and has proven to be a fantastic tool for connecting with athletes.

Just as no two turns on snow are the same, no two athletes are the same.  When faced with a unique (and stressful) situation, an athlete must rethink their approach, test out a theory, evaluate the outcome, and then prepare for the next situation.  In snowboarding, there is no right or wrong, only consequences.  An athlete can be successful if they can quickly work through this process and arrive at a workable solution.

It is my responsibility to create interesting, unique, and appropriately sequenced opportunities to keep my athletes learning every single day.  I believe that an athlete who has had these kinds of opportunities will learn to not only ride and race well, but will learn tenacity to peruse opportunities that will knowingly push their skills and boundaries.  As a coach, I derive an unbelievable amount of satisfaction when an athlete demonstrates that they are able to think independently and critically to overcome a situation that was not necessarily in “the plan”.  An athlete’s success in snowboarding today is directly transferrable to their future success in life.

I am always learning to ride better, coach better and I love the process of creating new and fun ways to get to the bottom.
